Keep It Simple: The Real Secret to Winning in Landscape Lighting

Ever since the Light It Up Expo, one thing has been stuck in my mind.

There were so many people stepping into landscape lighting for the first time—many of them already running holiday lighting businesses. And almost all of them said the same thing:

"People are asking if I do landscape lighting… I just don’t want to mess it up."

And honestly, that makes sense.

Because the older we get, the more intentional we become.
When you’re younger, you just go for it. No overthinking. No fear of consequences.

But now?

You start asking questions:

  • What if I do it wrong?

  • What if it doesn’t look good?

  • What if I mess up the design?

And that’s exactly where people get stuck.

The Difference Between Winners and Everyone Else

I started thinking—what separates people who win from those who stay average?

The answer is simple:

Simplicity.

Successful people don’t overcomplicate things.
They take action using simple frameworks.

Everyone else?

They overthink.
They overanalyze.
They delay.

And then they wonder why nothing changes.

Lighting Design Is Simpler Than You Think

Let me prove it.

Here’s a basic framework for lighting design:

  • Place a light on each side of every window

  • Add lights on both sides of the front door

  • Space them evenly across the house

  • Position them about 15 inches from the wall

  • Aim them slightly inward

Done.

You’re now a lighting designer.

Want to level it up a bit?

  • One-story homes → wider beam (around 60°)

  • Two-story homes → tighter beam (around 40°)

  • Trees → 1–3 lights depending on size

  • Path lights → every 8–12 feet

  • Large trees → use moonlighting or uplighting

That’s it.

That’s the “complicated” part people are afraid of.

Real Results from Simple Action

I taught this exact system to my first salesperson.

No experience.
No perfect design skills.

He went out and closed a $6,000 job on his first try.

At the expo, another guy:

  • Learned the basics over a weekend

  • Set up a few demo projects

  • Closed his first $6,000 job

  • Booked 9 more demos after that

That’s how this works.

Not perfection.

Momentum.

Why Waiting Will Cost You More

Here’s the truth:

Your first designs won’t be perfect.
You might even cringe at them later.

But your clients?
They’ll love it.

And more importantly—you’ll be in the game.

The biggest mistake people make is waiting until they “know enough.”

Meanwhile, someone else is:

  • Taking imperfect action

  • Getting real experience

  • Closing deals

  • Building confidence

Take Action, Not Notes

You don’t need more information.

You need more action.

Start small:

  • Do 5 installs

  • Then 10

  • Then 20

You’ll figure everything out along the way.

Final Thoughts

Don’t let overthinking cost you years of progress…
or worse—millions in missed opportunities.

Keep it simple.
Take action.
And keep moving forward.
