Stop Making Excuses: The Power of Belief in Achieving Business Success

We’ve all been there—moments where we find a reason not to push forward, not to make that tough call, or to avoid taking that next step. The other day, I came across a powerful Jim Rohn quote that hit home: “If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.” It was a wake-up call, and if I’m being honest, I’ve been guilty of making excuses myself. But each time we let an excuse hold us back, it tells us something: maybe we don’t actually want that goal as much as we say we do.

As I talk with business owners each week, I hear the same reasons for not hitting goals: “Leads are slow,” “I can’t charge higher prices,” “I’m not closing as many deals.” To me, these are just excuses. When we genuinely want something, we find ways to make it happen.

So, here’s the question to ask yourself: Do you really want what you say you want?

One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” My kids have probably heard it enough to last a lifetime, but I keep saying it because it’s true. Believing in yourself is far more profitable than doubting yourself. When we lack belief in our offer or our abilities, we communicate that lack of belief to others.

Finding Your True “Why”

Many people haven’t clearly defined what they’re working towards. If you don’t know what you’re chasing, how can you fully believe in it? How are you supposed to believe in yourself? Take a moment to ask: Why am I doing this? What do I believe in?

Here’s the simple truth:

  • Thoughts lead to beliefs.

  • Beliefs lead to actions.

  • Actions lead to results.

Many people obsess over results while ignoring the very things that create them: thoughts and beliefs. Ask yourself if you’re focused on the right steps. Are you working on your results, or are you working on your thoughts?

Shifting Your Mindset for Success

Are your thoughts positive or negative? Do you genuinely believe in what you’re offering? For instance, if you don’t believe people will pay $500 per light installation, then you’re right—they won’t. But if you change that belief, you’ll find ways to justify the value, which means you’ll start asking for it, and ultimately, you’ll get it.

This principle plays out in every area of business. The longer I’m in this field, the more I see patterns between those who struggle and those who gain traction. It always comes back to the same root cause: mindset.

So, stop complicating it. Start with your thoughts. Build up your belief. Let that drive your actions, and soon enough, you’ll see the results follow.
