Stop Waiting for Certainty: The Business Lesson I Learned from Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz

Last week, I spent almost $1,000—and it wasn't on a business mastermind or coaching program.

It was to watch The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Sounds crazy, right?

My family was already in Las Vegas because my daughter had a dance competition, so we decided to make a trip out of it.

The Sphere is unlike anything I've ever experienced. They're not just showing a movie—they're creating an unforgettable experience.

And that reminded me of something I've been teaching for years.

You're Not Selling a Product—You're Selling an Experience

If you're in the landscape lighting business, you're not just installing lights.

You're creating transformation.

You're giving homeowners that incredible feeling when they pull into their driveway after sunset.

You're creating a backyard where family and friends gather.

You're providing security, beauty, confidence, and pride.

People don't buy lighting fixtures.

They buy the experience those lights create.

But as powerful as that reminder was, it wasn't the biggest lesson I took home.

The Unexpected Lesson from Dorothy

There's a scene where the Scarecrow asks Dorothy if she thinks the Wizard will give him a brain.

Dorothy responds:

"I couldn't say... but even if he didn't, you'd be no worse off than you are now."

That simple line hit me harder than I expected.

How many times have you delayed making a decision because you were waiting to feel certain?

Maybe you've asked yourself:

  • Should I raise my prices?

  • Should I hire my first employee?

  • Should I invest in marketing?

  • Should I attend that industry event?

  • Should I hire a business coach?

We all want certainty before making big moves.

The problem is...

Certainty doesn't come before action. It comes after action.

Your Brain Wants Safety, Not Growth

Your brain is designed to protect you—not necessarily help you succeed.

The longer you think about a decision, the more reasons your mind creates to avoid it.

I remember cliff jumping with my kids.

Standing at the top, everything seemed possible.

But the longer I stood there...

The scarier it became.

Suddenly my brain had dozens of reasons why jumping was a terrible idea.

Business works exactly the same way.

The longer you wait...

The longer you overthink...

The more excuses your brain creates.

Confidence Is Built Through Action

The most successful entrepreneurs I know aren't fearless.

They simply take action before they have certainty.

Because they've learned something many people never do:

You become your own certainty.

Not by reading another business book.

Not by watching another YouTube video.

Not by waiting another six months.

By taking action.

Will every decision work out perfectly?

Of course not.

I've invested in programs that didn't deliver the results I hoped for.

I've hired employees who weren't the right fit.

I've spent money on marketing campaigns that failed.

But every one of those experiences gave me something even more valuable:

Clarity.

Now I know what works.

Now I know what doesn't.

That's how confidence is built.

Your Next Step

Ask yourself one simple question:

What have you been putting off because you're waiting to feel certain?

Is it:

  • Raising your prices?

  • Hiring your next team member?

  • Launching a marketing campaign?

  • Joining a business community?

  • Finally investing in your company's growth?

Whatever it is...

Take the next step.

As Dorothy wisely said:

"You'd be no worse off than you are now."

Your future won't be built by certainty.

It will be built by courage.

Keep moving forward.
