Unlocking the 4 Pillars of Outdoor Lighting for a Thriving Business
A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting Jimmy Tompkins from Omni RGB Lighting at my house in Utah. He was doing a training on permanent lighting, and I have to say—it was a blast!
You might be thinking, “Wait… permanent lighting?” Why am I talking about it?
When it comes to outdoor lighting, there are several business segments that you can pursue. In my experience, there are 4 key pillars that every outdoor lighting professional should consider to build a successful business:
Landscape Lighting
Holiday Lighting
Permanent Lighting
Event Lighting
These 4 pillars represent the core services that, when mastered, can help you create a lighting empire worth millions in just one market. Each segment plays a vital role in capturing different types of clients and revenue streams.
My personal favorite has always been landscape lighting—it’s a challenging yet rewarding service to offer. However, generating high-quality leads in landscape lighting is one of the hardest parts of the business. On the other hand, permanent and holiday lighting services are much easier to attract clients for.
When I ran my lighting business, we did around $200K in holiday lighting each year. While the profits were great, the time commitment was intense. The seasonal nature of holiday lighting demands a lot of energy and the hiring of temporary workers, which can be exhausting.
But here’s the key question—does your lighting business match your dream lifestyle? For me, $200K in holiday lighting was the cap I could handle while maintaining the life I wanted.
Permanent lighting, on the other hand, was something I wasn’t initially sold on. I loved it for holidays, sure, but the look for year-round use? I wasn’t so sure. And it turns out, many in the Landscape Lighting Secrets community feel the same way. They simply don’t like the look and choose not to offer it to their clients.
But, there’s another side to this. Some members—whether they love it or not—do offer permanent lighting to their clients. And guess what? They sell a lot of it. Not only that, but it also leads to more landscape lighting jobs. This highlights an important point: Don’t let your personal preferences limit your business opportunities. You could be missing out on future revenue.
That’s why I believe in offering a diverse range of services by embracing all 4 pillars. For example, landing a holiday lighting client today can turn into a landscape lighting job later, which could even lead to an event lighting gig down the road. These services cross-sell into one another, creating a steady pipeline of work.
If you’re not offering 3-4 pillars in your outdoor lighting business, I truly believe you’re leaving money on the table.
Because of this, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of the Light It Up Expo—the first of its kind outdoor lighting expo for professionals. It’s happening on February 28th and March 1st in Orlando.
Whether you’re looking to add new services to your offerings or need help with the business side of things, this event is for you. Plus, you’ll have the chance to network with lighting pros from around the world.
