You Are in Control of More Than You Think

In today’s ever-changing world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the challenges we face. I have clients across the U.S. and Canada, and while some are experiencing their best months ever, others are facing significant obstacles. Some friends in the industry are encountering even greater difficulties.

People tell me that leads are drying up, deals aren’t closing as they used to, prices are dropping, and the world seems to be in chaos with wars, hurricanes, and stock market crashes. It’s enough to make anyone feel powerless.

But you know what I say? So what. Turn off the news and get to work.

The world has faced hard times before, and it will again. You don’t get to control everything around you, but you do have control over much more than you think.

One of the most powerful things you control is your attitude. Every day, you choose how to react to the conditions around you. This is 100% within your control.

Now, let me be vulnerable for a moment. I’ve been going through something challenging myself. I had several people I thought would attend our SECRETS Summit event next month in Utah. It’s a members-only event, and I was confident they’d be there. But as it turns out, they’re not coming.

I spoke to a few of them, and I heard similar reasons: bad timing, too much going on, financial constraints, new hires to manage, and more. It hurt to hear that. It hurt because I was so sure they’d be there.

The truth is, this situation highlights a harsh reality: you are 100% in control of your future. While you can’t always predict or control the consequences, you do have control over your situation. If these individuals truly wanted to be at the SECRETS Summit, they’d find a way to make it happen. That’s why it stings. Either they don’t want to be there, or they don’t see the value they’re missing.

And that’s a problem I need to solve for my business. It’s a lesson I’m sharing with you because there’s something to learn from this. Where in your business can you apply this lesson? Where might you be failing to communicate the value to your clients?

Take a moment to reflect and learn from my experience. The next time you’re faced with something you want to do but feel you can’t, ask yourself this: What has to be true for you to be able to do that? In other words, what problem needs solving?

This is how you reverse engineer your life. Don’t tell me you’ve tried and it doesn’t work. If one approach doesn’t work, try another. Iterate, pivot, and try again. It works.

I went through a similar challenge in 2008. Everyone around me—friends, family, the news—said it wouldn’t work. But I shut out the noise and got to work.

So, what are you going to do to take action? You either make excuses or you make it happen. The choice is yours.
