What Mountain Biking Taught Me About Business Momentum

I want to share a quick story.

Recently, my 12-year-old son Max (almost 13!) got into mountain biking. For a while, I was convinced he was on the fast track to becoming a full-time Fortnite champion—living in my basement forever. 😂 So, needless to say, I was relieved (and excited) when he discovered a passion for the trails.

Now we’ve got this awesome thing we can do together—riding. But one recent ride gave me a moment of clarity I wasn’t expecting.

We came across a narrow bridge over a fast-moving river. Naturally, as a dad, my mind went into overdrive thinking about everything that could go wrong. So I gave Max just two pieces of advice:

  • Keep your speed up

  • Don’t look off the side

Why those two things? Because when you slow down, you lose momentum—and when that happens, you lose balance. And if you focus too much on the danger, your mind will guide you straight toward it.

It’s not about telling yourself “Don’t fall off the bridge.”
It’s about saying “Stay on the bridge.”

And that, my friends, is exactly how business works.

Too often, we obsess over client problems, employee missteps, or the little fires popping up in front of us. We lose sight of the path. We slow down, thinking we’re being cautious—but in reality, we’re making it harder to move forward.

That’s why I created my Momentum Method—a simple 4-step framework to help you ride smoother and grow faster:

🚴‍♂️ The Momentum Method

1. Shift Your Mindset
Speed is your friend. The faster you move, the more control you actually have. Stop overthinking and start trusting yourself.

2. Spot the Resistance
What’s the thing in your business that’s making you hesitate? Hiring? Pricing? Posting that video? Identify it so you can confront it.

3. Pedal Into It
Don’t tiptoe—commit. Speed smooths out the bumps. Whether you're launching something new, raising your rates, or hiring your first VA… go all in.

4. Stay Focused & Stay Off the Brakes
Once you're in motion, don't look back. Keep your eyes on where you're going—not where you might stumble.

This Week’s Challenge:

What’s your hill?
What’s your bridge?

Instead of slowing down… pedal harder.
Instead of staring at the rock… look at the path.
Instead of playing it safe… lean into the momentum.

Let me know how it goes.
Keep moving forward,
– Ryan Lee
