Crazy Enough to Build Something Bigger

Last week, we hosted our very first Friday Flyin here at my house in Utah.
And honestly… it was incredible.

A small group of members flew in from different parts of the country to spend a few days together focused on one thing: building better businesses.

We kicked things off Thursday night with a tour of Keith Rosser’s shop. After 25 years in business, Keith has built an operation packed with systems, structure, and experience. Seeing the behind-the-scenes process — from inventory and installs to team management and operations — was a masterclass in what long-term business success actually looks like.

Then on Friday, everyone came to my house for a full day of conversations around growth, leadership, bottlenecks, pricing, hiring, scaling, and mindset.
(My mom even cooked lunch for everybody, which made the day even better.)

But during all those conversations, one thought kept coming back to me:

You have to be a little crazy to become an entrepreneur.

Think about it.

You work long hours.
You take massive risks.
You deal with uncertainty constantly.
You sacrifice comfort, time, and stability.
And sometimes, you have no guarantee it’s even going to work.

Most people would never willingly choose this path.

But the people who build extraordinary businesses?
They believe they can create something bigger than themselves.

They believe they can build a company that eventually operates without them.
They believe they can completely change their future.

And that belief — as crazy as it sounds — is often exactly why they succeed.

The more successful entrepreneurs I meet, both inside and outside the lighting industry, the more I notice they all share three important traits:

1. They Think Bigger

Most people set goals that are too small.

“I just want to survive.”
“I just want a little growth.”
“I just want an extra income boost.”

Small thinking creates small outcomes.

If you want a completely different life or business, you have to start asking bigger questions:

  • What would your company look like at $5M?

  • What about $10M?

  • How many leads would it take?

  • What systems would need to exist?

  • What type of leadership team would you need?

Big businesses are built intentionally — not accidentally.

2. They’re Intentional

Successful companies don’t happen through luck or emotion.

They’re built through systems, planning, leadership, and clear decision-making.

Every hire, process, and strategy should move the business closer to the vision you’re creating.

Intentional business owners don’t simply react to problems.
They build frameworks that prevent problems from happening repeatedly.

3. They Take Action Before They Feel Ready

This is where most people stop.

They wait for certainty.
They wait for confidence.
They wait until they “feel ready.”

But entrepreneurship doesn’t work that way.

You hire before you feel ready.
You invest before you feel ready.
You grow before you feel ready.

Because certainty comes after action — not before it.

That’s the uncomfortable truth about building something meaningful.

But it’s also what creates transformation.

If you were already the person capable of building your dream business, you would’ve already built it.

And that’s not discouraging — it’s exciting.

Because it means your future is still being created.

So stop waiting.

Think bigger.
Get intentional.
Take action.

And build something crazy.
