What a Spartan Race Taught Me About Entrepreneurship: 3 Lessons from the Mud

When I signed up for a Spartan 10K race, I expected a physical challenge—but what I didn’t expect was how many lessons I’d take back into my business. Turns out, the mud, obstacles, and exhaustion have a lot to say about entrepreneurship.

Here are 3 quick takeaways from the dirt and sweat that hit me hard—and will hit home for any business owner chasing growth:

1. Don’t Expect to Compete with the Elite If You’re Not Prepared

Spartan: The elite racers weren’t winging it. These guys were strong, fast, and trained to dominate. They showed up ready because they put in the work beforehand.

Business: Want to crush it in your field? You can’t expect top-tier results on part-time effort. Preparation beats potential every time. If you want to play at the top, you have to earn your seat.

2. Competition Makes You Better—Whether You’re Behind or Ahead

Spartan: I spotted a beast of a guy ahead of me and decided to chase him. That single decision pushed me harder than I would’ve pushed myself. And when I got close? He stepped it up too.

Business: Whether you’re trying to catch the person ahead or stay ahead of someone chasing you, competition keeps you sharp. It fuels growth, hustle, and hunger.

3. Fire. Ready. Aim.

Spartan: I didn’t wait to feel “ready.” I booked the race, the flights, and the hotel before I was anywhere near prepared. That commitment forced me to train—and show up.

Business: Don’t wait until everything’s perfect. Take the leap, then figure it out as you go. Bold action creates momentum. Waiting for the “right” moment just delays progress.

These are just 3 out of the 13 lessons I learned from the Spartan race.
