If you’re a landscape lighting contractor, it’s easy to think your next big project is going to come from someone searching Google for “landscape lighting near me.”
But what if it doesn’t?
What if your next $20,000 project is already happening—you just haven’t met the person who can introduce you to it yet?
That’s exactly why referral partners can be such a powerful part of your lead-generation strategy.
I’m on the road a lot right now.
Between my own events and other industry events, I’m traveling for what feels like seven weeks straight.
Recently, I had the opportunity to spend time with the Lights for Decorators team and help with one of their training days. Now I’m heading to CEDIA Expo in Denver.
And here’s the interesting part:
CEDIA isn’t a landscape lighting show.
It’s primarily focused on home automation, technology, and integration.
So why go?
Because there is always something to learn from other industries.
But there’s another reason I’m interested in events like CEDIA:
Referral partners.
Think about the types of companies attending an event like CEDIA.
Home automation companies are working inside some of the nicest homes in the country.
Their clients are already investing in:
Home automation
High-end audio
Home theaters
Motorized shades
Security systems
Smart home technology
Custom renovations
Luxury construction
And you know what many of those homeowners are going to invest in eventually?
Outdoor lighting.
Maybe the home automation company doesn’t want to design and install landscape lighting themselves.
That’s perfectly fine.
Actually, that’s the opportunity.
Eventually, their client may ask:
"Hey, do you guys do outdoor lighting too?"
Wouldn’t it be great if their answer was:
"We partner with an amazing outdoor lighting company. Let me introduce you."
The question is:
Are you that lighting company?
We just came through the end-of-summer slowdown.
People are finishing their vacations.
Kids are going back to school.
It’s hot.
Homeowners aren’t necessarily sitting around thinking:
"You know what sounds fun today? Let’s spend $20,000 on landscape lighting."
But here’s the thing:
The big projects didn’t stop.
The $500,000 backyard project is still happening.
The pool is still being built.
The custom home is still under construction.
The major remodel is still moving forward.
Those projects don’t disappear just because homeowners aren’t actively searching for landscape lighting.
And that’s one of the reasons I love referral partners.
They can help reduce—and sometimes even eliminate—the seasonal roller coaster that many lighting contractors experience.
Your ideal referral partners are people who already work with the types of clients you want.
That could include:
Home automation companies
Pool builders
Landscape architects
Luxury home builders
Interior designers
Realtors
Landscape companies
Outdoor living contractors
General contractors
Custom home remodelers
Architects
The list goes on.
The important thing is that these businesses are already in front of your dream customers.
You don’t have to convince the homeowner to start a project.
The project already exists.
You just need to build the relationship that gets you invited into it.
Here’s where a lot of contractors get this wrong.
They find a potential referral partner and send a generic email saying:
"Hey, we'd love to work with you. Please send us referrals!"
That’s not relationship building.
Instead, take the time to understand the other business.
Ask yourself:
How do they make money?
What types of projects do they want more of?
What problems are they trying to solve?
What makes their job easier?
How can you help THEM win?
That last question is especially important.
Instead of thinking, “How can this company send me more leads?”
Start thinking:
“How can I become a valuable partner to this company?”
That shift changes everything.
Here’s my challenge for you this week:
Identify five companies in your market that are already serving the clients you want.
Don’t just make a list.
Research them.
Learn about their business.
Look at the projects they work on.
Understand their ideal customers.
Find out what they care about.
Then start building an actual relationship.
Maybe that means connecting with them on social media.
Maybe it means stopping by their office.
Maybe it means grabbing coffee.
Maybe it means referring business to them first.
The goal isn't to immediately ask, “Can you send me leads?”
The goal is to become someone they want to recommend.
If your entire lead-generation strategy is waiting for someone to Google “landscape lighting near me,” you’re leaving a lot of opportunities on the table.
Your next $20,000 project might not come from Google.
It might already be under construction.
It might already have a homeowner, a budget, a contractor, and a timeline.
You just might not know the person who can introduce you to it yet.
So get out there.
Find the people who already have access to your ideal clients.
Build relationships.
Create partnerships.
Become the lighting company they’re excited to recommend.
Your next great project may already be happening.
You just need to build the relationship that gets you invited.
Keep Moving Forward!
